Two years is a general starting point
Alberta Court of Justice guidance describes a general two-year time limit for injury or property-damage claims, including car accidents. That is not a calculation of your individual deadline: discovery rules, exceptions and the particular claim can affect the analysis.
Different steps can have different deadlines
A lawsuit against another driver, a claim against your own insurer and a notice requirement are not necessarily governed by the same deadline. Do not assume that ongoing negotiations or a pending medical assessment preserve your right to sue.
Have the dates checked early
Bring the accident date, insurance information, correspondence and any documents already served or filed. Ask counsel to identify the relevant claims and deadlines. Waiting until the apparent last day can leave too little time to prepare and file the necessary documents.
